During the few days between the 20th and 23rd of November 2012, the southwest of England was hit by heavy rain, falling on saturated ground from the very wet spring and summer. The result was severe flooding, not seen for a long time. The Somerset Levels have a number of flood defences, designed to flood the low lying moors to protect the surrounding roads and houses, but, the defences were stretched beyond the limit and extesive flooding remained two weeks later.
