During the few days between the 20th and 23rd of November 2012, the southwest of England was hit by heavy rain, falling on saturated ground from the very wet spring and summer. The result was severe flooding, not seen for a long time. The Somerset Levels are designed to flood to protect the surrounding roads and houses, but the extent of flooding breached the defences. A submerged gate is visible in the foreground.
