  • View across the Somerset Levels from Burrow Mump. Shows rural life in lowland Somerset. The Somerset levels are a large area of wetland landscape, some areas have been deliberately allowed to flood to provide excellent wetland habitat for a number of rare and common species. The area in view is prone to flooding during the winter.

  • During the few days between the 20th and 23rd of November 2012, the southwest of England was hit by heavy rain, falling on saturated ground from the very wet spring and summer. The result was severe flooding, not seen for a long time. The Somerset Levels are designed to flood to protect the surrounding roads and houses, but the extent of flooding breached the defences.

The Somerset Levels have a number of flood defences, designed to flood the low lying moors to protect the surrounding roads and houses, but, the defences were stretched beyond the limit and extesive flooding remained two weeks later.

  • During the winter of 2014, several major flooding events occured across Somerset. During the tidal surge from a deep area of low pressure, coupled with the spring tides, Blake Gardens in Bridgwater flooded, as it had one month earlier. This time flood defences were erected to protect St Saviours Avenue and they held, protecting the houses from further flooding.

  • Every winter, millions of starlings roost in the reedbeds of the Avalon Marshes area in Somerset each night. The exact location can vary from night to night, as can the level of display they perform. I wanted to catch some of the movement, so used a slow shutterspeed to add some dynamism and give more of an abstract view.
